Elisabeth Tangye came to live with her husband at 'Bellington'. She moved to the 'Old School House' after his death and lived in the centre of the village, continuing her life-long interest in local history, exemplified by the founding by her husband and herself of the 'Friends of Saint Cassian's' and the engagement of John Roper to write his very comprehensive history of the church.
In the late 1970s she organised the evening courses of lectures and got together a number of us to do original research on documents about the village. Without her initiative the local Studies Group (as it was then called) would not have started. We owe her a great debt and are delighted that the family have agreed that her name may be used in the title of these talks.

The Elisabeth Tangye Memorial Lecture

The memorial lecture, held in the autumn, is an annual social occasion designed to have a wide appeal.

'Churches in Chaddesley Corbett', the subject of the 2007 Elisabeth Tangye Memorial Lecture, given by Tim Bridges was well-received by a large and attentive audience.

The well-illustrated talk covered the history and background of the places of worship in the parish of the different denominations. While the emphasis was on our parish church of St Cassions, parts of which, including the famous Norman fount, date back to the 12th century, Tim also talked of St Mary's Catholic church at Harvington, raised in the 1820s and its predecessor the chapel, first the secret 17th century one in the Hall and the later barn conversion. His talk concluded with the simple little Methodist Chapel at Bluntington built in 1870 to cater for the spread of nonconformity.

DRAM OF SHEEP DIP PLEASE LANDLORD

The annual Elisabeth Tangye Memorial Lecture was given this year (2006) by Brian Draper M.B.E who took members and guests of the Chaddesley Corbett Local History Society on an interesting and enjoyable trip down the River Severn from Bridgnorth to the sea. Humour and enthusiasm for the subject enlivened Mr

Afterwards several people remarked they wished they had taken notes, in order to visit the beauty spots, nature reserves and historic houses he mentioned. What was the name of the pub where the landlord collected his patrons by boat when the river flooded or the one at Oldbury on Severn where you could sink a dram of sheep dip or pig's nose?
