OFSTED INSPECTION OF THE VILLAGE SCHOOL
The village
school was inspected by Ofsted on 24th and
25th September
2008. The report is now available on the school's website: www.ccschool.co.uk.
The inspectors were
extremely impressed with the children, their confidence, their behaviour and the
fact that they enjoy learning and coming to school. It was recognised that
through the ethos of the school and the positive learning environments created
by the staff, that children are developing positive attitudes to their work and
to each other. The inspectors also felt that children have a good approach to
maintaining a healthy lifestyle through sensible diet and exercise.
Pupils' personal development and well-being have been judged as "good"
as has the pastoral support and care provided. The vast majority of parents are
very positive about the school, the children's development, the school
environment and the good relationships with staff.
All aspects of provision in the Reception Class were assessed as
"good".
Leadership, teaching and progress, as well as personal and social development
and care and welfare were all recognised as strengths of the school.
The inspection team acknowledged that the "good" leadership of both
the headteacher and the governing body; the school has a clear sense of
direction and an ability to continue to make further improvement. The school's
self-evaluation was accurate so that it knew exactly what needed to be done to
secure further improvements.
Academic standards in the school are broadly average. Pupil progress is the key
aspect on which improvement is necessary. The inspectors saw evidence that we
are determined to achieve this, and that there is clear evidence of good and
better practice in teaching and learning throughout the school. The school has
an effective system of tracking pupils' progress which will now be used to gain
a clearer view of why some children are under-achieving and this will impact on
the activities staff plan so that work is pitched at the right level to
accelerate children's academic progress.
The Ofsted inspection fully supported the school's current focus on raising
standards in writing and numeracy, and that targeting an improvement in basic
skills, such as spelling and multiplication facts, will have a clear impact on
children's ability to write fluently and to undertake problem-solving tasks.
The inspectors reported that attendance was broadly average, but that this was
spoiled by the number of absences through term-time holidays.
The overall Ofsted
judgement is that the school is "satisfactory".
This is not a negative judgment; it means that we are not a school causing
concern in any major area and are good some respects.
The inspectors recognised that as a new school set up in the context of the Wyre
Forest Review, we had already made progress in a number of areas that will begin
to have a greater impact as these practices become further embedded.
