Lady Dudley Cup (Established .. 1897) 2008 Result: 1st_Cottage River (D Mansell) 3/1, 2nd_Canon Bridge 9/2, 3rd_Irilut 9/4 Fav. 8 ran. Cottage River, trained by Julie Houldey and ridden by David Mansell, despite tiring badly at the final fence kept on gallantly to record a length-and-a-quarter win in the 2008 Lady Dudley Cup at the Worcestershire Hunt point-to-point meeting at Chaddesley Corbett. 2007 winner, Irilut, which went off with jockey Sam Waley-Cohenthe as the 9/4 favourite in the eight runner field was content to bide his time as first Gentle Rivage and then Cottage River set a strong pace from the outset. Making his move at the fifth-last fence as the leaders set sail for home his challenge ended early and although Welsh challenger Canon Bridge (Dai Jones) also challenged over the final two fences Cottage River (trained at North Nibley for owners Peter and Lisa Hall) proved the winner - living-up to the description by Houldey as an out-and-out stayer. David Mansell (based at Bishops Cleeve near Cheltenham - but with many Herefordshire connections) said:
Fresh from a riding treble at the Ludlow Hunt meeting the previous week, Mansell scored another double when he also took the final Maiden race aboard Grey Image. |
