Doing something for
Lent?
What are you doing
for Lent this year? What's Lent for anyway?
Lent has been part of Christian tradition for many centuries.
The idea is that it's good to exercise some particular
discipline, like prayer or fasting. It will be good for our
spiritual growth, and it will prepare us for the celebrations of
Easter.
Spiritual growth
How do we grow
spiritually – and how would we know if we were?
A simple way would be to ask: are we loving God more, and are we
loving other people more? This might sound simple to do – but
there are plenty of distractions to take us away from it.
And how do we keep motivated to love God and other people, in
the long term?
Motivation
A funny thing,
motivation. How do I get a reluctant son to knuckle down to his
academic work?
I can point out the importance of getting a good qualification.
I can point to the unfortunate consequences of not doing so.
What really counts is the proximity of deadlines and exams. He
suddenly sees the end coming and (sometimes too late!) decides
to get down to it.
The final deadline
Every day we are
all of us a day closer to the day we die.
You would think that if we have any sort of belief in God
however vague, it would motivate us to spend more time and
energy in seeking Him out and learning to know Him. Yet
sometimes the opposite can happen. We surround ourselves with
yet more distractions, to keep us from facing the final truth.
The disciplines
Part of the answer
could just be in those ancient disciplines.
When we stop the regular flow of busy lives, we open up the
possibility of connecting or reconnecting with God. We may need
to find a special place – in our homes, a church, or somewhere
away from it all – as a place of retreat. We will need to give
time – from a few minutes, to an hour or a longer period. We
can then place ourselves at God's disposal, and allow Him to
grow the fruit within us.
