Chaddesley Corbett WI

A very well attended meeting enjoyed an interesting and informative talk by Mel Mills. This was his third visit to Chaddesley, each time speaking about a different aspect of his life. This time he told the meeting about his time working in a prison. Mel told the members some general statistics about the prisons in Britain and then went on to speak  about his experiences. He showed the members what his key chain would have been like and the importance of how the key chain was used. He then went on to inform and entertain the meeting with facts and anecdotes about prison giving members an insight into this aspect of life.

Jackie Emeny said how successful the new members evening had been with 17 new members from the local group of W.I s attending. Nora was congratulated on having her photograph of the Severn Valley Railway chosen to be in next year’s calendar.

Anna Hanson gave the details of future County events which members could attend. These included an overnight trip to R.H.S.Wisley, a golf competition in Oxfordshire, a visit to Highgrove and an ”Easter Goodies” day.

Chaddesley’s forthcoming events include a visit by the Lunch Club to the Ewe and Lamb with an evening visit being planned in May and the March Craft Club will be decoupage eggs. BROCKENCOTE W.I.

At our meeting on the 18th March - Roy Albutt gave us a fascinating talk on Stained Glass Windows, from Medieval times when the monks used these pictures to teach people, because most couldn't read - to the present day when people commemorate a window in memory of a family member. He told us how the windows were made and the different processes which evolved over the years. During Henry VIII’s reign, Cromwell and the Puritans, the craft virtually died out, fortunately after this time there was a revival and we are therefore fortunate to have a superb pictorial history to choose from. He included some wonderful windows from all over the Country, but also picked out a lot of local ones to go and see, pointing out unusual and amusing details to look out for. Some of us did not realise that there were 2 factories in Bromsgrove, famous for making stained glass windows, from where they were exported even to New Zealand. He is a clear and entertaining speaker, and we much enjoyed his time with us.

On the 26th March we are hosting the Kidderminster Group Meeting at which Dr Gillian White will be talking about Elizabethan Textiles to approximately 90 members from 8 WI's. We are sure she will be a very interesting speaker.

The 15th April will be our AGM - where to lighten the proceedings Anita Boston will be showing us how to Decorate Eggs, and the competition will be 'An Egg Cup' .

The 20th May will be our Resolutions Meeting, but also Mike Randle will be updating our First Aid Skills.

Visitors and prospective new members will receive a warm welcome at any of our meetings. 2-4 pm at Chaddesley Village Hall, third Wednesday of the month.
